Activities
During the last decades PRB has been involved in the following disciplines: Rural engineering, agriculture & crop husbandry , animal health & livestock production, income generation, micro- finance and women development activity. The strategy for implementation of programs based on active participation of the community in program planning and execution. The strategy aims at promoting the individual project sustainability. Nevertheless, the primary objective is the promotion of local community to find solution for its own problem.
Rural and Urban Engineering/Construction: This discipline is one of the most important branches in the organization. It has executed numerous vital projects most of which are identified and participated by the communities. The branch consist the following sections: - reconnaissance survey, detail survey, design & cost estimation, feasibility study, construction. supervision and monitoring & evaluation
Execution capacity: The executing capacity of engineering branch has been remarkably developed through the years of service to the nation. So far it has executed over eighty rehabilitation, construction and reconstruction of small and medium size projects in various fields of road & bridges, irrigation structure, public buildings, water supply, alternative energy and micro hydel.
Road and infrastructures: PRB early inception reconstructed number roads and their related structures in the provinces of Khost, Paktia, Logar, Kapisa, Badakhshan, Takhar, Balkh Jawzjan. and Kunduz The roads are either connected district to the district, districts to the provincial capital or villages to the district center. PRB staff had received training in road construction from reputed international firms for long and short term training program..
Bridges: PRB has engaged in construction/reconstruction of bridges in a number of provinces. The types of the bridges constructed were wooden, concerted, arch type from bricks/ stone masonry and suspension. These bridges were mainly to connect villages to the district center. They are mostly pedestrian or small vehicle bridges.
Irrigation Structure: PRB strategy is from very outset to increases the agricultural production through rehabilitation and improvement of irrigation structure i.e. siphon, retaining wall, intake/ diversion structure, flood protection walls, culvert, flume, aqueduct, turnout, tunnel, drop wash and etc. Scores of these structures have been constructed in different parts of the country during past years.
Safe Drinking Water & Sanitation: Safe drinking water is very precious and there is a great need for availability of safe drinking water in most part of the country. Due to scarcity of safe drinking water there is a lot of water born diseases among the inhabitants, which is recorded in the media. PRB has executed a number of activities in this sector, the activities include: net works of water supply, shallow and semi deep wells, rehabilitation of spring and water tunnels. In sanitation PRB has worked in sanitation system of urban as well as rural areas.
Buildings: PRB construct/ reconstructed public utilities buildings such as school, hospital, BHC (basic health center) CHC (comprehensive health center), veterinary clinic hospital, different type of schools ware houses, government office, shelter for disaster affected people. PRB has the capacity to construct all types of building in advance technology.
Staff: PRB has gathered highly qualified and experienced technical experts. The majority of technical staff is graduates form engineering institutions and holds degrees in various engineering disciplines. Some of them have got higher education from overseas universities also. The technical staff has gained sufficient experience in their respective fields. Several complicated projects have been planned, designed and executed through this branch. At present there are 20 qualified degree holders of different engineering fields serving at PRB as permanent staff in offices inside Afghanistan and aboard. Similarly scores of diploma and certificate holders as assistant to engineers are in PRB service.
Consultancy and engineering services: PRB being one of the sound technical organizations in Afghanistan provides the following services to organizations, companies and government departments upon their requests. -Survey, feasibility study, cost estimation and design of the projects. - Provision of engineers on contract basis. -Engineering supervision & inspection. -Technical training and transfer of know-how.
Agriculture: PRB agriculture activities include rehabilitation of agriculture and its product in Afghanistan. The trail and distribution of improved wheat seeds, maize, rice and vegetable seed are the first priority of agriculture activity PRB has distributed hundreds farmers with improved varieties of wheat seed and vegetable over the past years. The seeds either produced in PRB frames or provided by FAO, ICARDA and other agencies. . PRB also run a series of demonstration plots in both fruit and forestry nurseries. PRB produces different fruits saplings and distributes to farmers at prices lower than market. Considering the environment enhancement as critical issue in the country, PRB established a forestry nursery and distributed to private and government sectors free of charge.

PRB has VFU (veterinary Field Unit) in each district of the provinces. The VFU are housed in suitable building either built or rented. The VFU are staffed with technical personnel: DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), Asst DVM, Paravet and BVWs. The activities carried out by these VFUs are Vaccination, Treatment and De-warming.
(b). Livestock production: In the pre-war era livestock products were the major components of Afghanistan export. It is one of the main sources of economy of the rural area of the country. Being one of the vital components of Afghan economy, livestock production is one of the major programs of PRB. The projects were in the form of distribution of food for work & distribution of improved wheat and fertilize, digging of wells, rehabilitation of canals, road reconstruction and shelter construction.
(6). Community Development Organization: Securing sustainable livelihood/ empowerment of Afghan society through community development is PRB approach in its three year and five year strategic plans. In line with the three years work plan (1997-1999) number of PRAs (participatory rural appraisal) are conducted in PRB target districts in Badakhshan and Kabul respectively.
PRB long term approach is to establish VBOs (village based organization) in the target areas indicated in PRB five years strategic plan. The aim of the approaches is to establish a sustainable village system. All the development requirement of the villages such as education, health, agriculture, livestock, water supply, income generation & enterprises, infrastructure, irrigation and other necessary components will be included in the integrated development program of each village.
